Much like Joni Mitchell, John Martyn largely abandoned straight-ahead folk music by the mid-1970s -- choosing instead to focus his creative energies on a progressive fusion of jazz rock, funk and reggae. One World, released in 1977, represents the culmination of this exploration. As ambient as singer-songwriter fare can be, every cut is wrapped in hazy, drizzly reverb, especially the album closer "Small Hours." Recorded outdoors, and featuring Steve Winwood on Moog synthesizer, the lengthy cut is suffused with the late-night atmosphere of the English countryside.
