In stark contrast to Clare Maguire’s 2011 debut, which tried far too hard in casting her as the next Adele, the soulfully naked Stranger Things Have Happened captures the full breadth of her talents and idiosyncratic charms. After all, we’re dealing with a British singer/songwriter who is as skilled at playing American country blues as she belting out an atmospheric art song. “Elizabeth Taylor” is a gripping, neo-noir confessional chronicling Maguire’s battle with alcohol addiction following the release of that ill-fated debut. The title track, meanwhile, is downright tragic sounding: over lush, dream pop strings, her voice quivers, uttering the wondrously cryptic line, “When the rain hits your face, I feel like an actress in your embrace.” If that wasn’t enough to prove the expanse of her talent, she practically stops time on “Falling Leaves,” a desolate yet utterly spellbinding descent into heartbreak and misery inspired by late period Billie Holiday. Ms. Maguire has the goods (and then some), and this potent album proves it.
