The Turkish dubsters have always had a trippy vibe to their folk-classical-jam-rock sound. But Gecekondu sounds positively gone. Long, slow, stretched out grooves float along like they were created on a cloud (or maybe in a cloud of hookah smoke). Nine-minute meanderings like "Hayde Hayde" would be asking a lot, if they weren't so hauntingly beautiful. And sandwiching the super-epic jams amid more succinct cuts that take up patchworked folk ("Le Furet dans la Foret en Feu") as easily as they do dubbed-out trance ("Temptation") proves that Baba Zula's brain cells are fully functioning.
